Leadership, Social Change and Competitive Advantage
FSG’s Dane Smith will discuss Shared Value. Shared Value is the transformative power of business to affect social change at scale while enhancing competitive advantage. Core to the mission of CDFI banks is building communities, creating opportunity for the underserved, and promoting racial equity.  Yet, CDFI banks often struggle to articulate the business case for mission and impact. Dane Smith will talk about how CDFIs can seize the growing consumer appetite for purpose-led companies to elevate their banks’ mission and create a competitive advantage.

Networking Session: Share Your PPP War Stories
Of all the things 2020 threw at us, the PPP looms large for CDBA bankers. Did you step out of bed in the morning only to walk to your computer and process applications? How often did you pray for clarification on a major issue only to receive an FAQ clarifying that yes, telephone cooperatives were eligible? Do you have one (or one hundred) small businesses that you are especially proud to have helped? What is the one, single most important thing that would have made the program better?

Pull up a chair, mix a specially designed cocktail, and join fellow lenders for a lighthearted gripe session to share your PPP War Stories.

Promoting Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Your Bank
Featuring Jeannine Jacokes of CDBA, Erin Kilmer Neel of Beneficial State Foundation, Francis Janes of Beneficial State Foundation, John Holdsclaw IV of National Cooperative Bank, Cynthia Newell of City First Bank of DC, Shannan Herbert of City First Bank of DC and John Olaimey of Southern Bancorp.

After a short presentation on the business case for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, participants will choose a breakout session to join:
Breakout 1: Dispelling the Myth of Finding “Diverse” Talent
Facilitators: Francis Janes, Beneficial State Foundation; John Holdsclaw IV, National Cooperative Bank; John Olaimey, Southern Bancorp
CDFI banks operate with a mission to provide financial services and to generate economic development in low- to moderate-income rural and urban communities. While our commitment to diversity is strong, the current state of racial injustice in the country has put more pressure on banks to hire and retain Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) employees at all levels of the organization, including senior leadership. This breakout session will explore how to improve the recruitment of more diverse talent. Historically, the emphasis on hiring diverse talent without improving the organizational culture to provide a sense of inclusion and belonging has proven problematic. We will discuss how social isolation, unconscious bias, no clear path for advancement and a lack of mentors/sponsors can affect retention of diverse talent.

Breakout 2: The Interplay of Banking Products and Systemic Racism
Facilitators: Erin Kilmer Neel, Beneficial State Foundation; Cynthia Newell, City First Bank of DC; Shannan Herbert, City First Bank of DC
In this session, we will dive into specific areas where historic and current systemic racism and bias impact the delivery of banking products and services. We'll use data from a variety of studies to examine concrete areas where we as banks can make changes to address racial inequities and build more equitable deposit and loan products and services, and get inspiration and ideas from a successful lending strategy at City First Bank.

CDFI Program Week: Assessing FA Supplemental Opportunities
The CDFI Financial Assistance Program provides flexible capital to support new activities.  Yet, many CDFI banks “leave money on the table” by not fully utilizing the supplemental funding opportunities offered by Healthy Food Financing Initiative and Disability Funds. Successful application consultants will discuss how to assess your track record, readiness, and share tips on how to create a winning request.

Featuring Manjima Bose of FUND Consulting, Holly Logue of Logue Advisory Services, Everett White of Sones & White, Michael Tolleson of Peoples Bank, Dana Batterton of FNBC Bank, Erica Cooper of FNBC Bank, and Caroline Nowery of Virginia Community Capital.
